Melbourne residents outraged as council imposes changes in garbage tax - Eureka Free Press

A Melbourne council has faced criticism for adopting a contentious change to how ratepayers are billed for trash pickup, and the mayor has been compelled to defend the council’s decision.

The City of Yarra Council approved a proposal on Tuesday night to add a separate line item for the cost of trash service disposal to the rates notice sent to households.

Yarra Mayor Claudia Nguyen said the move is being made so the council can be more open with people. Currently, waste removal is included in the regular rates bill.
