Removal of iVote draws outrage from vision impaired NSW voters
Advocates for the blind and people with impaired vision have criticised the NSW Electoral Commission’s (NSW EC) decision to restrict voting options after iVote was shut down because of a technical issue during the 2021 local elections.
Tens of thousands of votes were left uncounted in three council districts as a result of the glitch, forcing voters to cast new ballots.
Bruce Maguire, the chief policy adviser for Vision Australia, claimed he has received a deluge of complaints from members of the public who are “disappointed, furious, and offended” that they may only vote by phone.
It’s one of the few instances, he added, where a policy intended to advance people’s rights has actually been reversed.
